Protein C Antibody Summary
Protein C is a vitamin K–dependent plasma glycoprotein that plays a critical role in the regulation of blood coagulation. Synthesized in the liver, Protein C circulates in plasma as an inactive zymogen and is activated to activated Protein C (APC) through proteolytic cleavage by the thrombin–thrombomodulin complex on endothelial cell surfaces.
Once activated, APC serves as a potent anticoagulant by inactivating Factors Va and VIIIa, thereby downregulating thrombin generation and preventing excessive clot formation. In addition to its anticoagulant activity, APC exhibits cytoprotective and anti-inflammatory effects, contributing to vascular integrity and endothelial health.
